La Mata is a district in Vega Baja del Segura, part of the well-known town of Torrevieja. Framed to the north by Guardamar del Segura and to the west by the Natural Park of the Lagoons of La Mata.

Its origins began with the exploitation of the salt of the lagoon of La Mata around 1320. Its name comes from La Mata's white wine, hand made with the local “meseguera" grape. And it population was always reduced.

There are two natural resources that are worth mentioning:

• Dunes protected beaches; back in the day this area had sand dunes that moved with the winds, in 1900 through a reforestation project the sand dunes were fixed by growing a beautiful forest forest also known as Pinewood (“pinada"). In here you'll be able to enjoy the spanish sun and beach surrounded by the local nature.

• Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja: with 3,700 hectares this natural area occupies the municipalities of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Rojales, which together with El Hondo and the salt flats of Santa Pola form a well-known triangle of wetlands in the south of Alicante. There is a diversity of fauna and flora, a great quantity of different birdlife such as flamingos. With vineyard dated to centuries back, that thanks to its arid and sandy soil made it resist through time and pest invasions. Currently there are only 75 hectares of vineyards and the rest were ripped off for the urbanization of the area.

Considered a dormitory city, this area has generated a big tourism - real estate development. Inhabited by several European nationalities who in possession of housing on the Mediterranean coast have chosen this town as either their permanent home, holiday destination or as a location for a good investment in real estating.
