The Archaeological Site of the Rábita Califal in Guardamar del Segura, is the first example of this Islamic monastic construction type; that exists in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain)..
This site belongs to the Umayyad Andalusian period dating from the X-XI century, almost entirely preserved. It was a monastery where Islamic religious lived together, faithful performing the ribat and pilgrims.
Francisco Mira's extraordinary find consisted of a red sandstone tombstone commemorating the founding of a mosque in 944. after Christ., under the mandate of Caliph Abderraman III. The original tombstone is currently in the Archeological Museum of Murcia.
It is built by 23 oratory cells attached to each other, two complementary rooms and a mosque. All these rooms are distributed around two streets and grouped into three different areas: the sacred area, the area for the reception of pilgrims and the area of the monastery, where the monks who formed the stable congregation of this rábita (religious fortress) lived. These oratory cells, in their day, were plastered with mud and whitewashed.
